How to Navigate Feeling of Fertility Failure

Be aware that is normal to fail in fertility outcomes. Using a UK model it was estimated that one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage and 1 in 7 couples will experience fertility struggles. Statistically it takes around 2.5 cycles to get to a live birth, meaning there will be some women where it takes many more than that and some where it won’t work at all. It doesn’t mean you’re a failure, contrary to how you might feel. To acknowledge the way you feel, can be half of the battle when you’re experiencing fertility difficulties. The emotions that entail such as anger, resentment, guilt, isolation, loss or failure are legitimate.

Communication is key to those that are close to you. Explaining how you’re feeling to somebody you trust will help them ensure they’re speaking to you sensitively; and can help you feel less isolated. Setting boundaries of who you may or may not want to see is also important. It can be useful to remind yourself that one’s fertility journey is yours alone and it’s well within one’s rights to set boundaries to protect one’s emotions. Therefore, you might decide not to see certain people who aren’t being sensitive to your needs. In addition taking the next step when feeling ready to move forward is vital to help with fertility decisions. In doing so, feelings of empowerment such that the choice of continuing medical treatment or seeking to achieve something else that you’ve always wanted to do, outside of the fertility space will probably to lead to a much better mental outlook.

Finally, remembering that one isn’t defined by whether or not they have a child. There is a stigma that unfortunately still surrounds not having children, whether you are a parent or not. It is not reflective of your worth or success as an individual. It does not define you.
