Tips to Prevent Vaginal Issues During Pregnancy

Vaginal discharge is very common during pregnancy because of the increased blood supply of the perineal area and glandular secretions.

1. Avoid vigorous activities: Engaging in activities such as running and horseback riding can be done cautiously to avoid injury, particularly to the abdomen. However, contact sports should be avoided.

2. Sexual intercourse: Sexual intercourse is generally safe throughout pregnancy unless a woman has vaginal bleeding, pain, leakage of amniotic fluid, or uterine contractions. In such cases, sexual intercourse should be avoided.

3. Women who are planning to breastfeed do not need to do anything to prepare their nipples for breastfeeding. Expressing fluids from the breast manually before delivery may lead to an infection of the breast (mastitis) or even early labor. The body prepares the areola and nipple for breastfeeding by secreting a lubricant to protect the surface. This lubricant should not be rubbed off. Observing and talking with women who have breastfed successfully may be instructive and encouraging.

4. It is important to avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, or taking drugs not prescribed by a doctor during pregnancy. Even small amounts of these substances from time to time during pregnancy could harm the baby. This includes electronic cigarettes ("vaping") or marijuana. It is important to stop as soon as you find out you are pregnant, as the baby has already begun to form and could be harmed by smoking, alcohol, or drugs. If you need help quitting, speak with your doctor or nurse as there are treatments that can help.

5. Certain infections increase the risk of pregnancy loss. It is important to take steps to prevent these infections. Your doctor or nurse can provide guidance on how to circumvent these infections.

6. Taking prenatal vitamins provide the extra vitamins and minerals needed during pregnancy. They may also help decrease the risk of certain birth defects. It is important to take them as directed by your healthcare provider.

7. Eating a variety of healthy foods is important during pregnancy. This includes fruits, vegetables, whole-grain breads, low-fat dairy foods, beans, lean meats, and fish. It is also important to drink liquids as directed and limit caffeine intake.

8. Good hygiene that includes keeping the external genital area clean and dry can assist in preventing yeast infections. Avoid using irritating soaps, vaginal sprays, and douches. Change tampons and sanitary napkins frequently. Wear loose cotton underwear that doesn't trap moisture. After swimming, change quickly into dry clothing instead of sitting in a wet bathing suit for prolonged periods.

9. Preventing blood clots during pregnancy is vital, therefore it’s important to change body positions or move around often.

10. If Vaginal bleeding does occur the practitioner should be consulted for any advice that should be undertaken.
