Do Aphrodisiacs Really Work?

Do Aphrodisiacs Really Work?
The term 'aphrodisiac' originates from Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and passion. But Egyptian, Roman and Indian cultures – as well as Greek – all sought foods that could enhance libido and sexual satisfaction. The evidence supporting aphrodisiac foods is very limited, with most findings coming from animal studies. They can be a food, herb, or medication, and are typically derived from plants, animals, or minerals. There are a few different theories about how aphrodisiacs work, depending on the type. Some are thought to relax smooth muscles and increase blood flow, which can lead to an erection or enhanced sexual arousal in females. Others are believed to change brain levels of neurotransmitters that enhance sexual arousal, such as dopamine, glutamic acid, nitric oxide, and oxytocin, and those that diminish it, such as serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Some aphrodisiacs are also thought to increase levels of androgens, hormones like testosterone, which can boost libido, enhance sexual pleasure, boost sexual attraction, or improve sexual performance. However, research shows that for the most part, the power of aphrodisiacs is all in our head — but the placebo effect can go a long way.

Examples of aphrodisiacs that have some supportive credence in sexual libido are the following:
Red ginseng could improve sexual arousal in menopausal women. In men, ginseng may enhance erectile function thanks to the impact it has on nitric oxide production, helping blood circulation.

Pistachio nuts may help reduce symptoms of erectile dysfunction, possibly owing to the effect on blood cholesterol and stimulating better blood flow.

Pomegranate is full of antioxidants and does promote good blood vessel function, enhancing blood flow to key regions of the body and enhances sexual health for men with erectile dysfunction. These supplements could be useful when accompanied by real chemistry between couples.
